Our first event is now over! Divina de Campo gave us a performance to remember, and many other musical acts kept the excitement and atmosphere going all day while the public browsed round the stalls run by local LGBTQ-friendly organisations and businesses.
We'd like to thank everyone who performed or ran stalls - and of course those who provided our stage, indoor spaces away from the noise and occasional rain, and the other equipment needed to make this day happen. Our volunteers, our sponsors, the local council and emergency services, and the Mayor of Congleton. And of course to the people of Congleton who turned out in huge numbers to support Congleton's first ever LGBTQ+ event - you were amazing!
The very first Congleton Pride event took place on Saturday 20th July 2019 in Congleton town centre, when we celebrated the LGBTQ+ community, and equality and diversity within it. Then in the evening, many bars and pubs in the local area ran their own events in celebration of the day.
Our team who have organised Congleton Pride chose to do so because having spoken to various local people in and around Congleton, we discovered that a lot of LGBTQ+ individuals feel unsafe being themselves and expressing their sexual orientation/gender identity. Our hope has been to show everyone what the LGBTQ+ community is all about and give them a better understanding of it, in turn hopefully stopping any prejudice. Congleton should be a safe place for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, age or disability, and we are hoping that our pride event helps to enforce this. It is important to us that everyone understands the history of the LGBTQ+ community and how hard they had to fight to get where they are today within society. However, we named our event Congleton Pride because we want every individual in Congleton to have Pride!
