We are deeply concerned by the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s interim update following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling. This guidance, which redefines ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 as strictly biological, even for those with Gender Recognition Certificates, sets a dangerous precedent. It opens the door to widespread exclusion of trans individuals from spaces where they have long been accepted, such as restrooms, hospital wards, and shelters.
This isn’t about enhancing safety in women’s spaces; it’s about marginalising trans people. The ruling and subsequent guidance fail to recognise the lived realities of trans individuals, instead promoting policies that could lead to increased discrimination and harm.
We stand in solidarity with the trans community and call for policies that respect and protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of gender identity.
At Congleton Pride, we are proud to stand with our trans community. We affirm the right of every trans person to live safely, openly, and with dignity. Trans rights are human rights, and we remain committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Your voice matters. We encourage you to engage in the political process by writing to your MP or councillor to express your concerns about this, so we’ve provided some guidance and a template email you can use to get started…
