Congleton Pride is celebrating after volunteer Jess Maddison was named Volunteer of the Year at Cheshire’s LGBTQ+ Awards held at the Radius Campus Building in Crewe recently. Jess has become a much‑loved and highly valued member of the Congleton Pride team, and this recognition highlights their dedication to creating inclusive, joyful spaces for the local rainbow community and allies.

To celebrate the award, we asked Jess a few questions about their experience.
What made you want to volunteer for Congleton Pride?
“I think Pride is important, and I wanted to meet other people who cared as much as I do about the community”
How did it feel when you found out you’d won Volunteer of the Year?
“I was shocked because I was just doing what I enjoy and having a great time. It never occurred to me that I would get an award for something I enjoy.”
What’s been your favourite part of helping out at Congleton Pride?
“Meeting new people and celebrating the diverse community. It always surprises me how many people show up to the events and feel like they are in a safe space.”
What have you learned or enjoyed the most while being part of the team?
“I’ve learnt that I am more capable than I thought I was, and being part of a team makes the successes more enjoyable. I’ve also learnt how to use my voice more effectively to get my points across clearly.”
What would you say to anyone who might want to volunteer at Congleton Pride in the future?
“I would encourage anyone to volunteer. It’s fun, joyful and rewarding whether you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally. You meet amazing people and get a buzz from helping out. It’s a safe space for all who want to join, or even just to learn more and ask questions.”
Dr Abby Smith, Co‑chair of Congleton Pride, shared her congratulations: “Jess brings warmth, commitment and a genuine passion for community to everything they do. Their contribution helps make Congleton Pride the welcoming, vibrant and safe space our town is proud of. We’re thrilled to see their work recognised across Cheshire.”
